Part 2: Identifying the Works of the Flesh (Galatians 5:16-26)

The "works of the flesh" are the outward, evident, and destructive expressions of our fallen human nature. These are not merely isolated failures or moments of stumbling; they represent patterns of life that reveal the heart’s underlying state. Because the flesh never stays hidden for long, these works are described as "manifest" or clearly visible to those around us.

Four Categories of Fleshly Conduct

The destructive expressions of the flesh generally fall into four broad categories:

  • Appetite sins: These involve sexual immorality and a general lack of personal restraint.
  • Adoration sins: These include false worship and various forms of spiritual deception.
  • Attitude sins: These manifest as jealousy, hatred, wrath, and envy.
  • Action sins: These result in division, drunkenness, violence, and general disorder.

The Warning of the Flesh

A lifestyle that is consistently dominated by these works reveals a heart that has not been transformed. It is important to distinguish between a believer who occasionally stumbles and someone whose life is characterized by an unchanged nature. These behaviors do more than just show "bad behavior"—they expose a heart that remains separate from the life of God. While the law can restrain these sins or condemn the flesh, it lacks the power to change the human heart. Only a decisive stand against the authority of the flesh through Christ can bring true transformation.

The question is not whether the flesh still fights, but who is ruling the heart. Victory comes not by trying harder, but by yielding fully to the Spirit who alone produces a transformed life.
