Part 1: The Rhythm of the Daily Walk (Galatians 5:16-26)
“This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.” Galatians 5:16
The Christian life is often described not as a series of mountain-top experiences, but as a consistent "walk." This term refers to the ordinary, daily pattern of our lives and to the direction we are headed. To walk in the Spirit means to submit to the Spirit’s leadership through the Word of God on a regular basis. While the flesh remains present in every believer, it no longer has the right to reign over our choices.
Victory through Dependence
True victory over our old nature is not achieved through sheer willpower or human effort, but through total dependence on the Holy Spirit. Walking in the Spirit does not mean our fleshly desires are eliminated; rather, it prevents those desires from governing our behavior. This victory begins with a daily reliance on the Spirit’s power rather than waiting for dramatic spiritual moments to carry us through.
The Internal Conflict
Every believer experiences an internal battlefield where the old and new natures are constantly at war. These two forces are opposites with completely opposing desires. However, the presence of this struggle is not a sign of failure. The Christian life is defined by the presence of a new power, not the absence of conflict. The outcome of this battle is determined by who you allow to lead your walk. By choosing to submit to the Spirit, you tap into a power that the law could never provide.
Each step you take today will be led either by the flesh or by the Spirit; there is no neutral ground in the Christian walk. So choose dependence, keep in step with the Spirit, and trust that obedience in the ordinary will produce victory in the eternal.
