Part 3: Heavenly Acquaintance – He Knows Them
Nahum 1:7 “The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him.”
The third profound truth drawn from Nahum 1:7 is our Heavenly Acquaintance. Even as God’s purpose is being executed (The Lord’s Purpose, v.9-14) and His justice is certain, He assures us that "He knows them". This promise of intimate recognition is significant when we consider our previous state of distance from the divine.
This highlights that many were once considered Gentiles, aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise. In that time, they were far off, without Christ, hope, and God in the world. They were essentially unknown to the community of faith.
However, the miracle of Heavenly Acquaintance is that this distance has been bridged. Those who were previously "far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ". This monumental shift, described in Ephesians 2:11-13, means we are no longer strangers or aliens. We are now personally known by the eternal Ruler who delays and executes judgment. This knowledge is the basis for our ultimate security. In the storm of life, when the overwhelming power of the Lord is declared, the fact that He knows us is the ultimate comfort and consolation promised by the meaning of Nahum’s name. This personal knowledge ensures that we who were once without hope now have a permanent relationship, drawn close through Christ Jesus.
