“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding, In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”
- Proverbs 3:5-6.
I love this verse! This is my life verse and has been for several years. It seems so easy
to trust the Lord with our eternal souls, but fail to trust Him in the day-to-day situations.
Trusting with all our heart leaves no room for doubt. We must learn to take our hands off of our lives and give God full control. When we lean on our understanding, we put limits on what God can do in our lives.
As a woman, and the managers of our homes, we want to ensure that everything runs like a well-oiled machine. There is nothing wrong with that, of course, but what if it doesn’t? What do we do then? At times, we face circumstances that are just out of our hands to manage. We worry, toil, and try to reason within our minds how to make things run smoothly again.
The word translated “trust” in this verse means to lie helpless, face down. It pictures a servant waiting for the master’s command in readiness to obey, or a defeated soldier yielding himself to the conquering General. I love this definition of trust because it reminds me that I am not in control, God is.
We can’t always figure things out, but God never asked us to. Leaning on our own understanding gets exhausting. Genesis 18:14 says, “Is anything too hard for the Lord?” Of course the answer is no! Big or small, no matter what you’re facing, the Lord wants to help. In all thy ways acknowledge Him. All means all.
It could be a decision to buy a new car, or some bad news you just received from the doctor. Whatever it may be, give it to the Lord. Just as we have put our trust in Him for salvation, we must trust and surrender our daily walk to Him. The paths that we go down in life are not always where we want to go, but they are much easier when God is leading the way.
