Psalm 72:18 — “Blessed be the LORD God, the God of Israel.”
In this verse, the Psalmist praises God not only for what He does, but for who He is. The names used in this passage reveal three beautiful truths about God.
First, He is the Permanent God. The name “LORD” in all capital letters refers to the name Jehovah. This name declares God as the self-existing, eternal One. He has no beginning and no end. Revelation 1:8 describes Him as “the Alpha and Omega… which is, and which was, and which is to come.”
God does not change with time, circumstances, or culture. What He has always been, He will always be. In a world filled with instability, we can rest in the unchanging nature of God.
Second, He is the Powerful God. The word “God” in this verse is the Hebrew name Elohim, the same name used in Genesis 1:1: “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” This name emphasizes God’s mighty power and creative authority.
Nothing is beyond His ability. Ephesians 3:20 reminds us that He is able to do “exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think.”
Finally, He is the Personal God. The Psalmist refers to Him as “the God of Israel.” This reminds us that God is not distant or detached from His people. He is a relational God who enters into covenant and fellowship with those who belong to Him.
For believers today, that truth is just as powerful. The eternal God of heaven is not only the Creator of the universe—He is also our God.
When we truly understand who God is—eternal, powerful, and personal—it deepens our worship and strengthens our faith.
