“So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.” Psalms 90:12

Education is a big topic in our society today. Our schools are often a mess and getting worse. The Bible gives some instructions about the education needed. Let’s take a look at this verse.

Student. “So teach us.” The Psalmist recognizes his need to be taught. So many are not interested in instruction. They like entertainment but not education. Many today do not want the discipline of being taught in their mind; they already know everything. In church, this attitude shows up with people not wanting spiritual teaching but preferring a lighter program at church filled with socials, suppers, sports, etc. The Psalmist is telling us that we need to be a student at times.

Subject. “To number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.” There are many subjects we need to be taught by God. The Psalmist mentions a particular one here, and it is an important one. Basically, the subject is how to use our time wisely. All of us need help here. Time is what our life is made up of. There are 60 minutes in an hour and 24 hours in a day. There is no way possible to get any more than that! We waste so much time, and we use our time so poorly. Time is a precious commodity, but once wasted, it cannot be reclaimed. We all need to ask God to teach us to use our time more wisely.

“Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.” James 4:14

My dad told me this years ago, “Only one life will soon be past, all that’s done for Christ is all that will last.” May we use our time wisely!
