Devotion 4: Keeping in Step with the Spirit (Galatians 5:16-26)
Belonging to Christ involves taking a decisive stand against the flesh. When we identify with the cross, we acknowledge the death of the flesh’s authority over us. However, while the authority of the flesh is broken, its presence remains a reality that we must navigate daily. This requires more than a one-time decision; it demands a continual alignment with the Holy Spirit.
The Discipline of Humility. To successfully walk in the Spirit, we must guard against spiritual pride and the temptation to compare ourselves to others. Such attitudes disrupt Spirit-led living and give ground back to the flesh. Instead, a Spirit-filled life is characterized by:
The Final Choice. The command to "keep in step" with the Spirit suggests a rhythmic, intentional movement in the same direction as God. We face a daily choice: which nature will shape our walk? Will we be led by the flesh we were born with, or the Spirit who now lives within us? The flesh will always lead toward corruption, but the Spirit leads toward a life that reflects the beauty and character of Jesus Christ. By choosing to surrender each day, we ensure that the victor of our internal battlefield is the one who has already won the war.
The Spirit does not ask for perfection, only surrender. When we humbly yield our steps to Him each day, the power that won the war begins to govern the walk.
