Part 2: Heavenly Assistance – A Strong Hold in Trouble

Nahum 1:7 “The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him.”

When we contemplate the overwhelming power of the Lord—seen in Nahum Chapter 1 as the declaration of God's Power (v.3-5) and His Presence (v.6-8)—it is vital to remember that He is also a Refuge and a Ruler who defends His people. This leads us to our second point of comfort: Heavenly Assistance. The Lord is described as a "Strong hold in the day of trouble".

The term trouble refers to distress or anguish, the very kind of dark, stormy times Nahum anticipates. Conversely, a strong hold signifies a place of safety, protection, and refuge. God's assistance is concrete and absolute. The sources confirm that this help is inherent to His nature: "God is my strength and power" (2 Samuel 22:33). When faced with fear, we can recall that "The LORD is my light and my salvation" and "the strength of my life" (Psalms 27:1).

When we run to Him, He is more than just a momentary shelter; He is a comprehensive defense. The righteous find safety because they run into the strong tower that is the name of the Lord (Proverbs 18:10). He is available and active, described as "our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble" (Psalms 46:1). When danger seems to have laid a trap for us, we can call upon Him, knowing that He is our strength who will pull us out of the net. Ultimately, the divine assistance detailed throughout these scriptures assures God's people of protection (The Lord's Protection, v.15). He is truly a strong rock and a house of defense to save us.
